Use the county and city where the vehicle will be registered.

How this rate compares
How Utah applies it to a car
The rate follows the address the vehicle is registered to, not the dealer’s location. Buying in a 6.35% county while living in an 8.45% city means you pay 8.45%.
A dealer collects the tax at signing. On a private-party purchase you pay it to the DMV when you title and register the car.
Sales tax is separate from the title, registration and age-based fees. The car cost calculator adds those in.

Heads up: Utah charges the rate for the address where the car is registered, not where you buy it. A lower rate elsewhere only helps if you actually live and register the vehicle there. Use this table to see how your own area compares, or to weigh a move.
Tax on your car
The sales tax is only one line on the buyer’s order.
Doc fees, add-ons and a trade-in payoff can move the real price more than the tax does. We read the whole deal before you sign.
Where these numbers come from. Combined rates are copied from the Utah State Tax Commission’s combined sales and use tax rate chart, in effect as of . Each rate is the state rate of 4.85% plus every local, county, transit, highway and special-area tax that applies at that location. This is an estimate, not tax or legal advice. Confirm a rate for a specific address with the Tax Commission before you rely on it.
Locations marked MIDA or UIPA, plus housing and transit zones, sit under “Special districts and zones” in the city menu. Most buyers will not live in one.
Food, residential energy, transient room and short-term vehicle rental taxes use different rates and do not apply to buying a car.
