Nevada chain controls, in plain English

“Chains or snow tires required” means M+S tires with at least 3/16 inch of tread, or chains. “Chains required, except” lets through only four-wheel drive with four M+S tires. On the Tahoe roads, like Mt. Rose Highway and Kingsbury Grade, only 4WD or AWD with snow tires, or cars with chains on, get through.

Where this comes from. Road conditions, chain controls, closures, roadwork, weather station readings and camera images come from Nevada 511, the Nevada Department of Transportation’s traveler service, refreshed every few minutes. NDOT publishes it automatically and cannot guarantee it is accurate or current, and many roads show no report until winter driving starts. Always check before you go and drive for the conditions you see. Useful links:
