Chains are only required for vehicles towing a trailer on signed passes, and studded tires are legal from October 1 to May 31. If your trip crosses into Idaho, Wyoming, Utah or Colorado, check your car against their laws.

Where this comes from. Road conditions, closures, incidents, construction, weather station readings and camera images come from the Montana Department of Transportation’s 511 service, refreshed every few minutes. MDT publishes it automatically and cannot guarantee it is accurate or current, and a road listed as dry may not be dry where you are. Always check before you go and drive for the conditions you see.
