Car Ownership Cost Calculator

Sticker price is one number. What you actually pay is fuel, maintenance, insurance, registration and depreciation, every year, over the miles you really drive. Price one vehicle, then add a second or third when you want to see the gap. Print any of it.

The cheapest car to buy is rarely the cheapest car to own.

We run these numbers on every vehicle we vet, alongside a pre-purchase inspection and the negotiation. You get the one that costs least over the years you actually keep it.

Where these numbers come from. Fuel economy is pulled live from the EPA's official database for the exact year, model and engine you select. Everything else is a good-faith estimate built from published averages, not a quote. Registration assumes a Wasatch Front county. Maintenance is AAA's per-mile figure for a new vehicle in that class, adjusted upward for the vehicle's age and its brand's repair record, and real repair bills vary enormously between two copies of the same car. Depreciation follows a standard resale curve fitted to the five-year loss for that segment; a clean history and low miles beat the curve, an accident record does not. Verified September 2026 against:
